Aitoh Hanshi Paper is a traditional calligraphy paper ideal for practicing sumi art, ink wash techniques, and working with watercolors, inks, and other water-based media.

At approximately 20 gsm (7 lb), the sheets are lightweight yet surprisingly sturdy, allowing ink to flow naturally and washes to spread evenly. The paper crisply displays fine details, expressive strokes, and vibrant transitions, making it especially suitable for calligraphy practice and study.

Hanshi paper is rooted in the long history of Japanese papermaking, which began in the 7th century C.E. when papermaking knowledge was introduced to Japan from Korea by Buddhist monks. Over the centuries, this type of paper became widely used not only for calligraphy and painting, but also for crafts and everyday applications.

💡 Inspiration Tip

Let your calligraphy breathe by working with a slightly drier brush or ink load to keep the strokes crisp and expressive. Once dry, gently introduce a very diluted ink wash in the background, almost like a soft shadow. The Hanshi paper maintains fine details while adding depth without overpowering the lettering.
