Last Sunday, we talked about what Procion MX dyes are, how they work on natural fibers, and why they produce such vibrant, permanent colors. And I promised that this week we would see them in action…
So the long-awaited DIY is finally here!
Today we’re transforming a simple, natural woven rug into a bold, colorful boho statement piece using Jacquard Procion MX.
This project is perfect for seeing:
- how fiber reactive dyes behave on natural fibers like jute and cotton
- how smooth gradients are created
- how you can use the natural weave to enhance the final visual effect
The best part?
Every rug turns out completely unique. No two pieces are ever the same — and that’s the magic of handmade creation.
Let’s take a look step-by-step at how you can make your own.

Transform a Simple Natural Rug into a Boho Work of Art
Woven rugs made from natural fibers (jute, cotton, raffia) dye beautifully with fiber reactive dyes, creating striking gradients and circular patterns.
This particular design follows the natural weave and embraces the spiral structure of the rug.
What Type of Rug Do We Need?
✔ Natural fibers (jute, cotton, raffia)
❌ No synthetic materials
✔ Ideally a light natural color
Materials
- Woven jute rug
- 3–4 Procion MX colors (e.g., fuchsia, purple, yellow, turquoise)
- Soda Ash
- Spray bottles or squeeze bottles
- Paintbrush
- Plastic table covering
- Gloves
- Plastic wrap
- Sponge
Step 1: Preparation
Because Procion MX dyes are fiber reactive, they require an alkaline environment.
- Dissolve Soda Ash in water.
- Using a sponge or spray bottle, apply the solution evenly across the entire rug surface.
- Let it absorb well (damp, but not dripping).
Tip: Do not soak the rug in a bucket — it may lose its shape.

Step 2: Planning the Color Design
Observe the natural spiral of the rug.
The key is to follow the woven pattern.
You can create:
- Circular color “rings”
- An ombré effect from the center outward
- Random boho-style color spots
Step 3: Applying the Dye
- Dissolve each color in warm water.
- Start applying from the center.
- Gradually work your way outward.
For the look shown in the photo:
- Center: Turquoise
- Middle ring: Yellow
- Next ring: Purple
- Outer edge: Fuchsia
Allow the colors to gently touch for natural blending.

Extra Tip for Stronger Color
If you want deeper intensity:
- Apply a second layer after 10–15 minutes
- Or dab with a brush for richer saturation
Step 4: Setting the Dye
Wrap the rug in plastic wrap.
Let it sit for 24 hours at room temperature.
The longer it sits, the more intense the colors will be.
Step 5: Rinsing
Rinse outdoors with a hose or in a bathtub:
- First with cold water
- Then with lukewarm water
- Until the water runs clear
Let it dry flat — and it’s ready!
The most beautiful thing about this project is that there’s no right or wrong — only color and imagination.
