Rit Color Remover is a specialized product designed to remove or reduce color from fabrics before dyeing.

Unlike chlorine bleach, this product is a non-chlorine, reductive bleach that will not damage or deteriorate washable fabrics. It is primarily used to strip color from fabric so that new dye can achieve its true color.

By removing the existing dye, Color Remover creates a blank canvas for dyeing, making it an essential step for many fabric dyeing projects. It is also useful for correcting dyeing mistakes or removing unwanted color stains from white fabrics.

Color Remover works best on natural fibers such as cotton, linen, silk, wool, ramie and rayon. It may have a limited effect on polyester, depending on how the fabric was originally dyed during manufacturing.

Please note that Color Remover cannot remove printed patterns or fabric designs, and it will not remove indigo dye from denim fabrics.

For best results when re-dyeing fabrics, many creators use Color Remover first and then apply a Rit dye to achieve the desired color.

✨ Inspiration Tip

Before dyeing a garment a completely different color, use Color Remover first to strip the original color and help the new dye produce a cleaner, more vibrant result.

🎨 When to Use Rit Color Remover

Rit Color Remover is used before dyeing fabric to remove or reduce the existing color. This creates a neutral base that allows the new dye to produce a cleaner and more accurate result.

Think of it as preparing the fabric before dyeing, so the final color appears brighter, clearer and more predictable.

🧵 Why It Matters Before Dyeing

Fabric dye does not completely cover the previous color. Instead, the new color mixes with the existing one.

For example:

  • dyeing yellow fabric with blue dye → results in green
  • dyeing red fabric with blue dye → results in purple
  • dyeing dark fabric → produces an even darker result

Using Color Remover helps remove as much of the original color as possible so the fabric becomes lighter. This allows the new dye to show its true color.

✔️ When You Should Use It

Color Remover is especially useful when:

  • you want to completely change the color of a garment
  • you want clean, vibrant dye results
  • the fabric is dark or strongly colored
  • a dye project did not turn out as expected
  • you need to remove unwanted dye or color stains

⚠️ When It’s Not Necessary

You usually do not need Color Remover when:

  • dyeing white or very light fabrics
  • you simply want to darken an already dark fabric
  • you are doing tie-dye on white fabric

❗ Important Limitations

Color Remover cannot remove:

  • printed designs or fabric patterns
  • indigo dye from denim (jeans)

It may also have limited effect on synthetic fabrics, such as polyester.

💡 Tip for Best Dye Results

If you want to dramatically change the color of a garment, the most reliable process is:

1️⃣ Color Remover
2️⃣ Rinse and wash
3️⃣ Dye with Rit Dye

Following this sequence helps ensure the cleanest and most predictable dye results.

Rit Color Remover can be used in two main ways:

  • Stovetop method – the most effective method
  • Washing machine method

For best results, Rit recommends the stovetop method, since it allows you to maintain a consistently high water temperature.

🔥 Stovetop Method (Recommended)

  • Use Color Remover in a well-ventilated area. Open windows and use a fan if possible.
  • Pre-wash the item in warm, soapy water.
  • Fill a stainless steel pot with enough water so the fabric can move freely.
  • Heat the water to just below boiling (around 90°C / 195°F).
  • When the water begins to simmer, add 1 packet of Color Remover and mix well.
  • Maintain the water at a low simmer.
  • Wet the item and place it into the bath.
  • Stir occasionally.

Color removal may take:

  • as little as 10 minutes for some fabrics
  • up to 20 minutes for others

When the fabric turns white or off-white, remove it from the bath.

Then:

  • rinse with warm water
  • continue rinsing with gradually cooler water until the water runs clear
  • wash in warm water with a mild detergent
  • rinse and dry

Your item is now ready to be dyed.

🧺 Washing Machine Method

Color Remover can also be used in the washing machine.

⚠️ Not recommended for very large items or multiple garments.

  • Set the water temperature to the hottest possible setting.
  • Select a wash cycle of at least 30 minutes.

  • extra-large load → 4 packets

Then:

  • start the cycle
  • remove the detergent cup from the tray
  • pour the solution into the dispenser
  • flush the dispenser with 950 ml hot water

After the cycle:

  • rewash the item in warm water with mild detergent
  • dry normally

The item is now ready to be dyed.
