Gampi handmade papers have their roots in distant Japan and are made from the fibers of the Gampi plant. They stand out for their exceptional durability, smooth surface on both sides. Resistant to moisture and wear, they are ideal for artworks, books, and even high-quality printer prints. With a fine thickness and excellent quality, Gampi papers combine tradition with technique, offering a unique feel for every creation!
Today the Gampi plant is cultivated in Philippines in sustainable farms. The peeled bark is boiled and crushed in large kettles. The paper pulp mass is dissolved in water, spread evenly by hand on large scoop frames and such things as flower petals or dried leaves are added. The scoop frames are set out in the sun to dry. When the sheets are dry, they are removed from the grids, smoothed and checked. The paper is ready to be dyed or printed (batik) and possibly processed into products.
In the Philippines, there are many small workshops producing this paper. It is an important source of employment there.
