Schmincke Liquid Charcoal combines the expressive qualities of traditional charcoal with the handling of watercolor. Made from naturally sourced fruit pits and seeds from the EU, the charcoal is carefully carbonized to produce three unique black tones.
Mixed with gum arabic, the same binder used in watercolor, the paint has a gouache-like consistency while remaining fully water-soluble. The result is a highly granulating, matte black paint that performs beautifully on cold press paper and in layered techniques.
The paint can be diluted to create a wide tonal range from soft gray to deep black. Once dry, it can be layered with watercolor or even drawn over with dry charcoal, making it a perfect tool for mixed media artists.
