🎓 What Are DecoArt Americana DuraClear Varnishes & How to Choose

What DuraClear varnishes are

Americana DuraClear varnishes are water-based acrylic varnishes reinforced with polyurethane, designed to provide durable protection and a controlled final finish for painted and craft surfaces.

They create a clear, flexible protective film that:

  • protects against wear and moisture
  • will not yellow over time
  • preserves original colors
  • works perfectly over acrylics and mixed media

👉 Ideal for projects that need to last, not just look good.

🖌 How they work

DuraClear varnishes are applied in thin, even coats using a brush or sponge.
The finish can be built up with 2–3 coats, allowing each layer to dry fully before applying the next.

They work well on:

  • canvas
  • wood & MDF
  • paper & cardboard
  • mixed media surfaces
  • painted decorative objects

🎨 DuraClear finishes explained

All DuraClear varnishes protect your work — the difference lies in appearance and feel.

  • Gloss / High Gloss
Bright, shiny finish that enhances color depth and detail.
  • Satin
Soft sheen for a balanced, professional look.
  • Matte / Ultra Matte
Flat, non-reflective finish ideal for natural or mixed media effects.
  • Soft Touch
Matte finish with a velvety, soft-touch feel, perfect for frequently handled objects.

💡 How to choose the right varnish

Application Tip

Apply in thin layers and allow proper drying time between coats. A good varnish should enhance your work — not overpower it.

🎓 How to Apply Acrylic Varnish Properly

🧼 Surface preparation

Before applying varnish, make sure your artwork is completely dry. For acrylic paints, allow at least 24 hours of drying time.
Remove any dust or debris from the surface to ensure smooth application.

🖌 Choosing the right tool

Use:

  • a soft, clean synthetic brush or
  • a sponge applicator

The tool should be clean and free of paint residue to avoid streaks or uneven coverage.

🫙 Application method

  • Do not shake the varnish. Stir gently before use.
  • Apply small amounts at a time.
  • Use long, even strokes in one direction.
  • Avoid reworking areas while the varnish is still wet.

This allows the varnish to level properly as it dries.

Coats & drying time

For best results:

  • apply 2–3 thin coats
  • allow at least 1 hour drying time between coats
  • let the piece cure for 24 hours before handling

🌡 Application conditions

Apply varnish in:

  • low humidity
  • stable room temperature
  • a draft-free environment

Proper conditions help achieve a clean, even finish.

Helpful tip

Always test the varnish on a scrap surface before applying it to your final piece, especially when using a new finish.
