Matte Medium is an acrylic medium that allows you to change the properties of acrylic paint to increase the number of ways they can be used. Its most common use is to increase the fluidity of paint and increase transparency without altering the viscosity.

👉 It is a very versatile product that has many applications and characteristics as follows:

  • Use as a matting agent to decrease gloss sheen.
  • Works as a sealer/finish.
  • Can be used as a decoupage glue.
  • Use as a photo finish medium.
  • Thin with water to use as a spray fixative to prevent

What Is Gel Medium and How Is It Used?

Gel medium is a transparent acrylic medium with a thick consistency, used to modify the texture, volume, transparency and handling of acrylic paint. It can be mixed with colour or used on its own, offering a wide range of possibilities in painting, mixed media, art journaling and collage.

Depending on the type, gel medium may have a matt or gloss finish and different levels of thickness. Heavier gel mediums are suitable for bold textures and impasto, while softer gels are used for thinner layers and smoother applications.

🎨 Increases the Volume of Acrylic Paint

Mixing gel medium with acrylic colour increases the quantity and volume of the mixture without requiring more paint. The mixture retains its acrylic properties and consistency, unlike excessive use of water, which may reduce the effectiveness of the acrylic binder.

The more gel medium you add, the more transparent the colour usually becomes after drying, because the concentration of pigment within the mixture is proportionally reduced.

🖌️ Creates Volume and Raised Texture

Thick gel mediums are ideal for impasto, raised painting and artwork where visible brushstrokes and palette-knife marks are part of the finished result.

You can create:

  • Thick brushstrokes
  • Peaks and raised lines
  • Grooves and patterns
  • Textured backgrounds
  • Three-dimensional elements
  • Visible marks made with brushes, palette knives, scrapers and combs

The texture remains part of the artwork after drying and can be painted over with additional layers of colour.

🌫️ Creates Transparent Layers and Depth

Because gel medium dries transparent, it can be used to create transparent or semi-transparent layers. Mixed with a small amount of colour, it creates tinted transparent layers that allow previous shades and elements of the composition to remain visible.

This allows you to build:

  • Colour depth
  • Successive layers
  • Visual interaction between layers
  • Transparent colour effects
  • Interesting surfaces in mixed media and abstract artwork

Each dry layer creates both physical and visual distance between the elements of the composition.

🧩 Works as a Collage Adhesive

Gel medium can be used as an acrylic adhesive for attaching paper and lightweight collage elements to suitable surfaces.

Apply a thin layer beneath the paper, press it carefully onto the surface and, where needed, apply another thin layer over the top. Because it dries transparent, it does not conceal prints, patterns or images.

It is particularly useful for:

  • Collage papers
  • Craft papers
  • Book pages
  • Tissue paper
  • Ephemera
  • Lightweight card
  • Art journaling
  • Mixed media compositions

Very heavy or three-dimensional objects may require a stronger specialist adhesive.

🧱 Creates Raised Stencil Designs

Thicker gel mediums can be spread through a stencil with a palette knife to create raised patterns.

For cleaner results:

  1. Secure the stencil over the surface.
  2. Spread the gel evenly with a palette knife.
  3. Carefully remove the stencil while the gel is still wet.
  4. Allow the design to dry naturally.
  5. Add colour, metallic highlights or patina effects once dry.

✨ Changes the Finish of Acrylic Colour

Gel mediums are commonly available in different finishes:

  • Matt Gel Medium: Reduces shine and leaves a softer, matt surface.
  • Gloss Gel Medium: Adds shine and enhances the visual depth of colours.
  • Semi-Gloss or Satin Gel Medium: Creates an intermediate finish.

The final appearance also depends on the amount of medium mixed into the paint. The higher the proportion of gel, the more it influences the appearance of the dry surface.

🖼️ Can Be Used on Its Own

Gel medium does not always need to be mixed with colour. It can be applied on its own to create transparent texture, raised marks or a clear layer between different elements.

Once completely dry, it can be painted over with acrylic colours, inks, patinas or dry-brush techniques, depending on the project and the compatibility of the materials.

⚠️ Important Things to Know

  • Thick layers require more time to dry completely, including through the centre.
  • Gel medium often looks milky when wet but becomes transparent as it dries.
  • A large amount of gel makes acrylic colour more transparent because the pigment concentration is reduced.
  • Matt gel mediums may reduce some of the shimmer of metallic or iridescent colours.
  • Heavy raised layers require a stable support that does not bend easily.
  • Clean tools with water before the medium dries.
  • Gel medium is not a removable final varnish. Once dry, it becomes a permanent part of the artwork.

👍 Ideal for:

Impasto, raised painting, textured backgrounds, mixed media, art journaling, collage, stencils, mark making, abstract artwork, transparent layers, colour effects, palette-knife applications and projects with both physical and visual depth.
