🧪 How to Use – Soda Ash (EN)
Soda Ash (sodium carbonate) is used as a dye activator for cellulosic fibers such as cotton, linen and rayon. It raises the fabric’s pH, allowing fiber reactive dyes (e.g. Procion MX) to permanently bond with the fibers.
🌀 Tie-Dye – Pre-Soak Method
Mix:
1 cup (0.23 kg) Soda Ash in 1 gallon (3.79 L) warm water.
- Soak fabric for 20 minutes.
- Squeeze or wring out excess solution by hand.
- Do not rinse. Fabric is ready for dyeing.
🧴 Immersion Dyeing – Cellulose Fibers
Use:
1/4 to 1/3 cup (57–78 g) Soda Ash per 3 gallons (11.36 L) of water.
Add Soda Ash to the dye bath, following the instructions for the dye being used.
🌀 Washing Machine Dyeing – Cellulose Fibers
Use:
2–3 cups (0.47–0.71 kg) Soda Ash per load.
- Dissolve Soda Ash in 1 quart (0.95 L) hot water.
- Gradually add the solution to the washer dye bath according to dye instructions.
⚠️ Important Notes
- Soda Ash is not suitable for protein fibers such as silk or wool.
- It does not replace salt or vinegar — it serves a different chemical function.
- Use only with fiber reactive dyes.
✨ Extra Tip
For stronger and more even results in tie-dye and surface techniques, pre-soaking fabric in Soda Ash is often more reliable than adding it directly to the dye bath.
